PRIVACY: The European Parliament approves the new Regulation on the protection of personal data

29/10/2013

On October 21, the European Parliament approved amendments to the draft Regulation. The approval of the regulation began in January 2012, but since now it has undergone some slowdown. Just think that in January over 3000 amendments to the text were published.

The legislation is of great importance because it replaces the current national regulations with one set of rules and a single supervisor.

Among the innovations introduced, it must be reported in particular the strengthening of the sanctions. The fines can be up to 100 million euros (compared to 1 million proposed by the Commission), or to 5% of the sales volume of the convicted company. The Parliament's approval now opens the way for the agreement with the Council of Governments and the European Commission, with the aim of reaching the final approval by the legislature about to expire in May 2014.
